Once your Social Security card arrives, contact each bank where you hold an account and ask it to add your SSN to your profile, usually at a branch or through secure messaging. The bank records the number, may ask you for a new tax form, and can then offer products it held back.
Quick answer
How do you add your SSN to your bank account once it arrives?
To add your SSN to a bank account, bring your Social Security card and passport to a branch or use the bank’s secure message or phone line. Ask the bank to update your taxpayer ID, check which tax form it now needs (W-9 or W-8BEN), and repeat this for every card, savings and payment account.

Why you should add your SSN to your bank account
Banks can open accounts for non-US persons with a passport number under the federal Customer Identification Program rule. Once you have an SSN, though, the bank’s records should match what the IRS and the credit bureaus know about you.
- Tax reporting: interest the bank pays you is reported under your taxpayer number, and the bank needs the right one.
- Backup withholding: the IRS says payers may have to withhold 24 percent of payments such as interest when a US person fails to give a correct taxpayer identification number.
- Credit: cards and loans from the bank can be reported under your SSN, which helps you build a US credit file.
If you opened the account with an ITIN, the same update applies. The background is in our guide to open a bank account with an ITIN instead of an SSN.

Add SSN to bank account: step by step
A branch visit is the most reliable route, because staff can see the original card and fix the record on the spot.
- Wait for the physical card. The Social Security Administration explains how to get your number and card, and there is no charge for the card.
- Gather your passport, the Social Security card and your bank card or account number.
- Choose the channel: branch visit, secure message in online banking, or the phone number on the back of your card.
- Say exactly what you need: update my taxpayer ID from passport number to SSN on all my accounts.
- Ask which tax form the bank now needs and sign it.
- Check the change a few days later in your profile or tax documents page.
Questions to ask while you are there
- Is the SSN now linked to every account under my name, including savings and cards?
- Do you need a new W-9 or W-8BEN from me?
- Were any features limited because the SSN was missing, and are they unlocked now?
If the branch sends you online and the online form will not accept the change, ask for a personal banker. Our guide on what to do when a bank asks for an SSN you don’t have has polite ways to escalate at a branch.

W-9 or W-8BEN: which tax form to give the bank
When you opened the account as a newcomer, the bank may have asked for Form W-8BEN, which the IRS says a foreign person gives to a payer. Form W-9 is how you give your correct taxpayer number to a payer that files information returns with the IRS.
Which form fits depends on your tax residency, not your visa or your SSN. The IRS uses the green card test and the substantial presence test to decide whether you are a resident alien for tax purposes. If you are unsure, ask a tax professional before you sign either form.
| Form | Who it is for | What it tells the bank |
|---|---|---|
| Form W-9 | US persons for tax purposes, including resident aliens | Your correct SSN, so interest is reported to the IRS under it |
| Form W-8BEN | Foreign persons, such as nonresident aliens | You are a foreign person for US tax purposes |

Update every account, not just checking
Each product may sit in a separate system, so ask about each one or update each one yourself.
| Account | Why update it | How |
|---|---|---|
| Checking and savings | Interest reporting and tax form | Branch, secure message or phone |
| Bank credit card | Reporting to credit bureaus under your SSN | Card issuer’s service line or app |
| Zelle in your bank app | Your bank controls Zelle eligibility and limits | Ask the bank, then re-check Zelle |
| Brokerage or investing app | Tax forms and full account access | App profile or support chat |
| Venmo or PayPal | Identity verification limits | In-app verification |
Payment apps are where many newcomers first notice the missing SSN. See how to use Zelle without an SSN and whether Chime requires an SSN if you want an app account now.

If you used an ITIN before your SSN
Some newcomers, often H-4 spouses, get an ITIN first and an SSN later. The IRS says on its general ITIN page that you can’t have both, and that when you get an SSN you should notify the IRS so it combines your tax records under the SSN.
You can do this by mail or at a local IRS office, with a letter that includes your name, address, ITIN and a copy of your Social Security card. After that, stop using the ITIN with banks. If your spouse is still waiting for an SSN, our guide to open a bank account on an H-4 visa covers joint accounts.

Keep your SSN safe while you update
SSA advises treating your number as confidential and not giving it out when you don’t need to.
- Never send the number or a photo of the card by regular email or text.
- Use the bank’s secure message center, the phone number on your card, or a branch.
- If someone calls claiming to be the bank and asks for your SSN, hang up and call the number on your card.
- Store the card at home in a safe place rather than in your wallet.
Many Indian families share scans of PAN and Aadhaar cards over WhatsApp. Do not treat the SSN card the same way: keep it out of chats and shared drives.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a deadline to add my SSN to my bank account?
Federal rules let a non-US person open an account with a passport number, so there is no single national deadline. A bank may set its own deadline, especially if it opened your account while your SSN application was pending. Ask your bank what its policy is.
Can I add my SSN to my bank account online?
Many banks let you update a taxpayer ID through secure messaging or the phone, but some require you to show the card at a branch. The online profile page often does not let you edit the SSN field yourself, so ask a personal banker which channel works.
Does adding my SSN to my bank account change my visa status?
No. The update only changes the bank’s records. Your SSN card may say it is valid for work only with DHS authorization, and your work permission still comes from your visa or work permit. Ask an immigration attorney about any status question.
Next step: put your new SSN to work
With your SSN on file, accounts that were closed to you before are now an option. If you want a second account you can run from your phone, read how to open a bank account online without an SSN, which explains why online forms rejected you before and what changes now.
