How to Request Your Free ChexSystems Report

You can get your ChexSystems report free, online through the ChexSystems Consumer Portal, by phone or by mail. The Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to at least one free copy every 12 months, and ChexSystems says it provides all consumer disclosure reports free of charge. A ChexSystems report request takes a few minutes; the report itself is mailed or delivered to the portal.

Quick answer

How do I make a ChexSystems report request?

Register on the ChexSystems Consumer Portal at chexsystems.com and request a consumer disclosure report, call the number on the ChexSystems site, or mail the Consumer Request for Disclosure Form with copies of your ID, Social Security card and a recent proof of address. The report is free, and the law sets a 15-day limit for free annual reports.

Facts checked in November 2026 against official sources. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the provider before you act.

This research-based guide follows the ChexSystems request pages, its sample report and the FCRA. Never pay a third party to “pull” your ChexSystems file: the official report costs nothing.

Am I in ChexSystems? Signs you should check

You may have a ChexSystems record if a bank closed your account with a negative balance, you had repeated overdrafts or bounced payments, or a bank flagged suspected fraud. If a bank or credit union turns down your application and says a report was used, that is the clearest sign.

ChexSystems itself does not approve or decline anyone. Its FAQ says the decision belongs to the bank, which uses the report and its own policies.

If you were just denied an account

A bank that turns you down because of a consumer report must tell you, and under the FCRA you can get a free copy of that report if you ask within 60 days of the notice. Request it while the denial is fresh.

ChexSystems report request: three ways to ask

ChexSystems lists the same three routes on its consumer disclosure request page. You must be 18 or older to deal with ChexSystems, and you will need to prove who you are.

Ways to request your ChexSystems report

Online through the Consumer Portal

Go to chexsystems.com, choose Register and create an account, then request a consumer disclosure report. ChexSystems recommends a current browser and connecting without a VPN or proxy. The same portal lets you request your Consumer Score, place a security freeze and submit a dispute.

By phone

ChexSystems’ published number has a 24-hour automated system, and representatives answer from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm Central Time, Monday to Friday. Take the number from the official site rather than from a search result, since some sites list outdated or department-specific numbers. Hearing impaired callers can use relay service 7-1-1.

By mail

Download the Consumer Request for Disclosure Form from the ChexSystems site and send it to the Consumer Relations address shown on that page. Include your full name, current address, date of birth and Social Security number, plus a colour copy of your driver’s license or state ID (front and back), a copy of your Social Security card and a utility bill or similar proof of address dated within the last 90 days. ChexSystems mails the response to you.

How long does the report take?

The FCRA says a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency must provide a free annual report no later than 15 days after it receives the request, and the CFPB’s ChexSystems listing repeats that limit. Mail adds its own days at each end, so the online route is usually quicker to start.

If more than 15 days have passed since ChexSystems received your request, call and ask about its status.

Requesting without an SSN

ChexSystems asks for your Social Security number when you request a report, and the mail route also asks for a copy of the card. If you are new to the US and do not have an SSN yet, you most likely have no US banking history for ChexSystems to report. Call ChexSystems and ask what it accepts in your situation; we could not confirm on its site whether an ITIN or passport is enough.

Indian documents such as PAN or Aadhaar are not US ID and will not help here. If a bank refused you because you have no SSN, the issue is different: read what to do when a bank asks for an SSN you don’t have or how to open a bank account with an ITIN instead of an SSN.

How to read your ChexSystems report

The sample report on the ChexSystems site shows the sections you can expect. Banks see most of them; one section is for your eyes only.

  • Personal information: names, addresses, phone numbers and date of birth on file.
  • Reported information: each closed account, the bank, the reason such as NSF activity or suspected fraud, the charge-off amount and whether it is paid or unpaid.
  • Inquiries viewed by others: banks that checked you, kept up to 3 years.
  • Check-cashing and retail information from Certegy: kept 2 and 4 years.
  • Inquiries viewed only by you: not shown to banks.
  • Security freeze and alert records, if you placed any.

A section that says “No Information Found” has nothing reported. If every main section is empty, banks have nothing negative from ChexSystems to see. To learn when each item expires, read how long ChexSystems records last.

The Consumer Score is a separate request

The disclosure report does not include your ChexSystems Consumer Score. Request it separately in the portal; ChexSystems says score reports are free too. Our guide explains what your ChexSystems Consumer Score means.

What to do with what you find

If a record is wrong, dispute the ChexSystems record with your evidence. If it is accurate, read how to get off ChexSystems. Banks also use Early Warning Services, a separate file you request from that company; see ChexSystems vs Early Warning Services.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ChexSystems report really free?

Yes. ChexSystems says it provides all consumer disclosure reports free of charge, and the FCRA gives you at least one free copy every 12 months, plus a free copy within 60 days of being denied because of a report. Never pay a website to get it for you.

Does requesting my ChexSystems report hurt my credit score?

No. Requesting your own report does not affect your credit scores, as the CFPB notes in its listing of reporting companies. ChexSystems is a specialty reporting agency for bank accounts, not a credit bureau.

Can I request a ChexSystems report for my spouse or parent?

Only with their authority. ChexSystems needs a notarized power of attorney or notarized written instructions signed by that person, plus copies of their ID, Social Security card and proof of address, sent by mail. Parents can request a minor’s report by mail.

What if my ChexSystems report is empty?

An empty report means no bank has reported a closed account and no other negative item is on file. If you were still denied, ask the bank which report it used, since Early Warning Services or the bank’s own rules may be the reason.

Next step: request Early Warning too

Once your ChexSystems request is in, check the other file banks use. Learn how to get removed from Early Warning Services, which starts with requesting that report. If you want to stop anyone opening an account in your name, read how to place a ChexSystems security freeze.
