Facts checked in November 2026 against official sources. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the provider before you act.
Early Warning is a bank-account reporting company, like ChexSystems but separate from it. Fixing your ChexSystems file does not change your Early Warning file, so this guide covers Early Warning only. For how the two differ, see ChexSystems vs Early Warning Services.
Why Early Warning is in your way
Banks and credit unions report checking and savings history to Early Warning, and other banks check it when you apply. Stores can use it when deciding whether to accept your check. Early Warning points out that the decision to refuse you was made by the bank or store, not by Early Warning.
If you were refused, the notice you received should say whether Early Warning’s information was used. That notice also gives you the right to a free copy of your file.

Step 1: request your Early Warning file
Early Warning calls your report a file disclosure, and it is free. Its file disclosure page says to:
- Download, print and complete the consumer identification form, then sign and date it.
- Add a copy of government ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport.
- Send it by mail, by fax or through Early Warning’s secure upload portal, or call to verify your identity by phone.
Early Warning says the file is sent by mail or electronically within 15 calendar days after it verifies you, and faster in a few states, such as Rhode Island and California. It does not read your file out over the phone. If you are from India, use your passport; PAN and Aadhaar cards are not US ID.

How to get removed from Early Warning Services: match the fix to the record
What you do next depends on what the file shows. Early Warning’s own pages list these routes, checked in November 2026.
| Your situation | What to send Early Warning | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| An item is wrong or incomplete | A written dispute with your consumer ID number and proof | The bank reviews it; the item is removed, updated or kept |
| You owed the money and paid it | A paid receipt or official letter from the bank | Early Warning checks with the bank and updates your file |
| The account was in a bankruptcy | Your discharge papers showing the account was included | Early Warning checks with the bank and updates your file |
| Someone opened accounts in your name | An identity theft dispute with your report and proof | Fraudulent items reviewed for removal |
| The record is accurate and unpaid | Nothing yet: contact the bank first | Record stays until paid, updated or five years old |
Step 2: dispute anything inaccurate
Early Warning’s dispute your Early Warning file disclosure page says a dispute must be in writing and include:
- Your consumer ID number, from the first page of your file.
- The specific item, such as the routing and account number or contribution reference number.
- A detailed explanation of why it is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Copies of all supporting documents.
Send it by mail to Early Warning, Attn: Consumer Services, 5801 N Pima Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85250, by fax or through the secure upload portal. Colorado residents may also dispute by phone. Keep copies of everything you send.

What happens after you dispute
Early Warning sends your dispute to the bank that reported the item, and the bank decides whether it is accurate, needs updating or should be deleted. Under the FCRA, Early Warning has up to 30 calendar days to finish, and most disputes take less. It tells you the result in writing, by mail or email, within five business days of finishing.
If you disagree with the result, you can add a rebuttal statement of 100 words or less to your file. It must be about the disputed item and must not name other people or businesses.
Step 3: if you owe the money, pay and send proof
Early Warning’s page for people who were declined says the easiest way to fix a negative balance is to contact the bank directly. Once you have paid, send Early Warning a paid receipt or official letter from the bank. Early Warning then checks with the bank and updates your file.
Paying does not promise deletion; it shows the debt is settled, which some banks weigh when you apply again. If you are on ChexSystems too, the same proof helps there; see how to get off ChexSystems.

Why there is no opt-out, and how long records last
Early Warning is a consumer reporting company covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, not a marketing list. Data-broker “opt-out” services do not apply to it, and accurate information does not have to be removed just because you ask. What the law does give you is a time limit: Early Warning says negative records are not included once they are older than five years.
Watch for scams. Early Warning says it never charges to send your file, investigate a dispute or remove inaccurate information, and it does not collect debts, so anyone claiming to collect money for Early Warning is not legitimate.

No. They are separate companies with separate files. Send your dispute or paid letter to each company that shows the record, and request both files to confirm the change.

You do not need to. Early Warning does not charge to investigate or remove inaccurate information, and no one can make it delete accurate, current records. Everything a paid service does, you can do yourself for free.
