Remitly vs Western Union for Sending Money to India

In the Remitly vs Western Union India choice, both can deliver money from the US to an Indian bank account, a UPI ID or a cash pickup point. Remitly suits most people who send from a phone and pay from a bank account or debit card. Western Union fits better when you need to pay cash at a US counter or your family needs cash pickup.

Quick answer

Is Remitly or Western Union better for sending money to India?

For app transfers paid from a US bank account to an Indian bank or UPI ID, start with Remitly and compare. Choose Western Union if you must pay cash in person or want wide cash pickup in India. Both earn money on the exchange rate, so compare the final rupee amount, not the fee.

Fee warning first: a zero transfer fee does not mean a cheap transfer. Both companies set their own USD to INR rate, and paying cash at a counter adds the 1% US remittance tax.

How each one prices a transfer

Every transfer has two costs: the fee you see and the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate. Our guide to the exchange rate markup on USD to INR shows how to measure that gap in rupees.

Western Union says on its India page that it makes money from currency exchange. Remitly’s India page promises “great rates” but does not say it uses the mid-market rate, so assume a margin is built in. Neither publishes a rate you can rely on tomorrow.

Both run new customer offers, and offers end. Compare your second transfer too, not only the first.

Delivery: bank account, UPI or cash pickup

Both pay into Indian bank accounts. Remitly lists partners such as SBI, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, and Western Union names SBI, HDFC, ICICI and Axis among nearly 200 banks.

Both offer UPI. A wrong UPI ID is hard to reverse, so check it twice.

Cash pickup is where Western Union stands out. Its page cites more than 111,000 agent locations in India, a figure it dates to June 2021. Remitly also offers cash pickup through partners.

Speed: Express, Economy and same-day pickup

Remitly offers two speeds on many routes: Express, paid by card and usually faster, and Economy, paid from a bank account and slower. The app shows the estimate before you pay, and Remitly says late transfers get their fees refunded.

Western Union says cash pickup can be ready the same day, while a bank transfer may take up to five days. See how long it takes to send money to India for common delays.

How you pay, and the 1% cash tax

Remitly works through its website and app, funded from a bank account or a card. Western Union accepts a bank account, debit card or credit card online, and cash or a US debit card at an agent.

A credit card is usually the most expensive route; Western Union warns that a cash advance fee and interest may apply. Read how to send money to India with a credit card first.

The 1% federal excise tax applies only to transfers funded with cash, a money order or a cashier’s check. So it mainly affects cash paid at a Western Union counter.

Limits and ID if you are new to the US

Western Union lets you register with a US driver’s license, passport or other government ID, and may ask large senders for the source of funds. Remitly says limits vary by delivery method and rise with extra identity checks; it may ask for proof of address or the transfer’s purpose.

Downsides and who each is not for

  • Remitly is not for people who want to hand over cash at a counter, which its India page does not describe. Its new customer rate does not last.
  • Western Union is not for people who choose only on the fee; its exchange rate margin can outweigh a zero fee.
  • Neither is ideal for one very large transfer to your own NRE account; compare Wise and a bank wire too.

Both are licensed money transmitters, not banks. See whether it is safe to send money to India online for the checks to run.
