Wise vs Remitly for Sending Money to India

In the Wise vs Remitly India decision, Wise is usually the clearer choice for bank-funded transfers to an Indian bank account, because it converts at the mid-market rate and shows its fee upfront. Remitly is the better fit when you need cash pickup, want a card-funded Express transfer, or can use its new customer rate on a first transfer.

Quick answer

Is Wise or Remitly better for sending money to India?

For most transfers paid from a US bank account, start with Wise: it uses the mid-market rate and shows its fee before you pay. Choose Remitly if your family needs cash pickup or you want its promotional rate on a first transfer. Compare the rupees received on both, in the same minute.

Fee warning first: paying by credit card costs far more on both apps, and your card issuer may add a cash advance fee. Pay from a bank account or debit card where you can.

Quick picks by reader type

  • F-1 student receiving or sending small amounts: Wise, for its visible fee and the mid-market rate.
  • H-1B worker sending monthly support to parents: compare both; Remitly’s first transfer offer can win once, and Wise is easier to predict after that.
  • Parents who want cash: Remitly, since Wise’s India page lists bank and UPI delivery only.
  • Large transfer to your own NRE account: Wise, which lists high per-transfer limits and a discount above $25,000; also check a bank wire.

How each one prices a transfer

Wise’s India page says it uses the mid-market rate, the one you see on Google, and adds a fee you can see before paying. The fee changes with how you pay: on its $350 example, credit card and Apple Pay or Google Pay cost roughly three times a debit card.

Remitly sets its own USD to INR rate and does not say it uses the mid-market rate, so a margin is likely built in. Its India page offered new customers a better rate on the first $6,000. Our guide to the exchange rate markup on USD to INR shows how to turn that margin into rupees.

How to compare Wise and Remitly yourself

Live rates move during the day, so a quote from yesterday is not a test. Do this instead, in one sitting:

  1. Open both apps and enter the same dollar amount, delivery method and payment method.
  2. Note the rupees received on each screen, after all fees.
  3. Repeat with your second transfer in mind, since first transfer offers end.
  4. Check the delivery estimate, then pick the higher rupee amount that arrives in time.

Speed: seconds, Express or Economy

Wise says many India transfers arrive within seconds, but its FAQ adds that delivery usually takes one working day after conversion. Remitly offers Express, paid by card and usually faster, and Economy, paid from a bank account and slower. Remitly says late transfers get their fees refunded.

Bank-funded transfers on either app can wait for your US bank payment to clear.

Limits, UPI and NRE accounts

Wise’s India page lists up to 100 million rupees per transfer between individuals, 5,00,000 rupees instantly through IMPS and 2,00,000 rupees by UPI. Remitly says its limits vary by delivery method and rise as you verify more.

Wise says you can send to NRE and NRO accounts. If you are setting one up, read how to open an NRE account from the USA. For UPI steps, see how to send money to a UPI ID from the USA.

Wise asks you to pick a payment purpose and does not allow transfers to India for investment or charitable donation. Our guide on the purpose code for sending money to India explains the choice.

ID if you have no SSN yet

Wise’s help pages say US residents may be asked for an SSN or ITIN, and non-citizens can be asked for non-US ID instead. Remitly asks for government photo ID and may want proof of address for larger amounts. Our guide to sending money to India without an SSN covers both.

Both are bank or card funded, so the 1% US remittance tax does not apply.

Downsides and who each is not for

  • Wise is not for families who need cash pickup, or anyone who wants to pay cash. It is not an FDIC-insured bank; our Wise vs bank account guide explains what that means.
  • Remitly is not for people who want a rate they can check against Google; its margin is not shown as a separate line. Its promotional rate is for new customers only.
  • Both cost much more when paid by credit card.
